Cytokine Release Syndrome (CRS)

We are delighted that you have chosen the Immuno-Safety Tools module to start or enhance your current educational journey in immuno-safety science. This lecture is one in a series of six providing detailed information on tools currently used to evaluate and characterize the status of the immune system in a preclinical setting and is led by Dr. Jennifer Hall at Boehringer Ingelheim. Please review the learning objectives below for more information on what you will learn in this lecture.

Target Audience

This course is intended for the science professional or graduate student looking to learn the fundamental science and key considerations that are examined in immune safety assessment. The advanced topics offered in this module are intended to take a deeper dive into specific scientific areas. These courses are recommended for the more experienced scientist with a firm grasp of the information highlighted in the introduction module.

Learning Objectives

The learner will be able to:
  • Describe the signs and symptoms of cytokine release syndrome (CRS).
  • Detail notable cytokine storm adverse events in the clinic and mitigation strategies.
  • Understand the types of preclinical in vitro cytokine release assays (CRAs) for evaluating the potential for biologics to induce clinical CRS, including challenges with data interpretation and translatability.
  • Outline a general strategy for conducting CRAs and provide a case study.
  • Have an awareness of current regulatory guidance and industry focus on improving CRS prediction.
